Removing the Old Door
- Cut and Remove Trim
Carefully score the caulk between the trim and frame, then use a pry bar or hammer to remove the trim cleanly. - Remove Hinge Pins
With the door open, tap out the hinge pins using a hammer and a small tool like a nail or screwdriver. Pliers can also help. - Lift Door from Frame
After pins are removed, lift the door out of the hinges and set aside. - Take Off Remaining Hardware
Unscrew and remove any leftover components like the latch, strike plate, or screws. - Remove the Frame
Use a pry bar to take out the door frame from the rough opening. A saw may be needed for nails or tight fits. - Clean and Prep the Opening
Patch holes and clear out any leftover debris or adhesive.
Installing the New Door
- Measure the Opening
Confirm accurate height, width, and squareness of the doorway before proceeding. - Prepare the Space
Check that the subfloor is level. Shim where needed, and trim the opening if necessary for a square fit. - Set the Pre-Hung Door
Position the door in place, then use shims to ensure it’s level and plumb. Check reveal gaps before securing with nails. - Install Locks and Handles
Follow instructions to install the knob and lock. Make sure the latch lines up with the strike plate and functions correctly.
